This month’s flotsam and jetsam fresh from the shipwreck of my mind (in 140 characters or less): Don’t trust anyone who says, “We’re from outer space and we’re here to help you.” Like, who invited you anyway? Do you think God should be back in America? This was a Facebook poll with only a yes or no response. Neither choice seemed to apply so I’m responding to it here. I have to answer it with another question — “Did God leave America in the first place?” If God is omnipresent, how [...] I’ve answered a couple of polls regarding religious topics on Facebook recently. The questions were “Did Jesus Christ exist?” and “Should we keep ‘Christ’ in Christmas?” I’ll address each one separately. Did Jesus Christ exist? I have no reason to doubt that Jesus of Nazareth did, indeed, exist. The Jewish historian Josephus mentions Jesus twice [...] Here’s a bit of poetry I wrote many years ago. Life as Lunch I am sandwich. I am salami as you are fruit pie. When a girl reaches puberty and her breasts begin to develop, her mother generally takes her out and buys her a training bra. It’s a rite of passage for a young girl, a special moment for mother and daughter to bond. Just what is the purpose of a training bra? Are breasts wild animals that must [...] Do you believe atheists are immoral? No. Whether or not one believes in God has nothing do do with one’s moral character. Many non-believers may actually have higher moral standards than many believers. Consider all the wars, atrocities, terrorist acts, genocide, and persecution that have been carried out in the name of God (or Jesus). There [...] Lately I’ve been hearing an ad on the radio promoting a beauty product that alledgedly makes women look years younger. The ad features “testamonials” that have men saying the product made their wife or girlfriend look 10 or 20 years younger, implying that these men actually made these statements to their significant others. Are they nuts? [...] After work, I stopped by my local polling place and cast my votes. For the school board seats, I voted for those who had the least signage. It’s as goood a system as any, I guess. Local and state issues were a mixed bag. I voted for some and against others. I was not in favor [...] |
