When I was in elementary school, the history texts of the time didn't even mention those things and glorified Columbus as a hero. Maybe a little more balanced reporting is in order here. Why can't we just present the facts without value judgments? Every European power that sought to explore and colonize the Americas exploited and/or slaughtered the native peoples, took their land and their natural resources. Why single out Columbus? Maybe it's about time the education establishment presented the facts, the causes, the effects, the historical figures and events, without prejudice or value judgments, and let the students decided for themselves. Whoops, what am I thinking? That would encourage critical thinking and, worse yet, free thinking. We can't have that in Amerika, can we?
