My weekend didn’t turn out like I’d planned but that’s the way it goes sometime. This past week was Nude Recreation Week and I had planned to join my fellow club members at the Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat but stuff came up at the last minute and, for the second year in a row, I had to cancel my plans. I’m really disappointed and I really could have used a full day of total relaxation. Maybe I’ll get to go next year.
Her computer began misbehaving. For some unknown reason, it couldn’t access the Internet through a browser or FTP client. At first I thought it was the firewall software because it had inexplicably decided that the wireless adapter should be in the Internet zone. I fixed that, still no access. I turned off the firewall and still couldn’t access the Internet. Every other computer in the house could get out so the problem wasn’t with the router or my DSL.
I’d been meaning to reload it anyway so I backed up the data and loaded XP on it. That may not have been a very good idea. It took some coercion to get it to join the domain and it won’t run login scripts. The only network drive it maps is the home directory and that’s only because that’s part of the profile. I found something in the computer’s Group Policy to tell it to wait for a network connection before logging in but that doesn’t seem to work. The setting I need is available in 2003 Active Directory and later but my domain is Windows 2000. I’m about the only one that uses the mapped drives so I can live with it for now. Maybe next weekend I’ll back it up again, wipe the drive clean, and downgrade to Windows 2000. About the only good thing about XP on it is the wireless management. Otherwise, I’m profoundly unimpressed. Eventually, when 2000 becomes unsupportable, it will become a 100% Linux network.
The other accomplishment this weekend was victory over the leaky valve in the shower. Still unable to find suitable replacements, I had the guy at Gem City replace the packing washer inside the valve and sell me a new valve seat. It still leaked. I took it to Lowe’s and I finally talked to someone in the plumbing section who actually knew something about plumbing. He handed me a package of packing cord and told me how to repack the valve. I took it home, repacked the valve, put the shower plumbing back together and, for the first time in ages, it doesn’t leak. I feel so accomplished.
Computer stuff
Hey Rick,
So far, you site is killing me. But for now, the computer thing. I don’t know a rat’s ass about computers other than fixing and fighting them for years.
One little suggestion (which I’m sure you tried, but if I were actually were of that I wouldn’t mention) is to turn off all computers, unplup the cable modem, then the wireless router. Leave them off a couple minutes, then plug in the cable modem, wait until all is lit up, then plug in the wireless router. Give it a minute then turn on the computer(s). It’s a pain in the ass but if it works, hey?
If this isn’t your solution, maybe it will help someone else. That’s about you’ll get after waiting for an hour to talk to to the cable company. Good luck, anybody… Steve http://www.allnudist.wordpress.com

Thanks for the reply. It’s definitely an XP thing going on here. XP wants to log into the computer before it confirms a network connection. So when I log in to this particular computer it isn’t waiting for my domain controller to send it the login script. There’s something in Server 2003 group policy that would correct this but then I’d have to upgrade my servers. I’d just as soon not go through the hassle. I’ll live with it for now.
