"Nudity is our ideal state, our pure state, our natural state, our default state. Clothing is always a deviation from the default and is, therefore, a compromise and an aberration.."

"Body shame originates in our minds with our thoughts and perceptions. Neither our religion nor our culture makes us ashamed of our bodies, only our belief that we should be ashamed. Shame comes from our own thoughts which we have the power to change. If we perceive no shame then there is none. No one can make you feel ashamed without your permission."

Ordinary Naked People

Nudists are normal, morally responsible respectable citizens – singles, couples and families – who just happen to share a passion for wholesome social nudity. ~ Liz & James Egger in The Complete Guide to Nudism and Naturism

The phrase Ordinary Naked People recently appeared among search terms in my blog stats. It seemed so obvious that it sort of jumped out at me.

Yes, nudists and naturists are ordinary people. We are ordinary people who prefer not to wear clothes when there is no practical necessity for wearing them, who are comfortable in our own skins, who have learned that outward appearances don’t really matter and who have rejected the popular media’s impossible ideals of beauty and perfection.

We are ordinary people who believe that skin does not equal sin and that concepts of decency, modesty and morality apply to one’s behavior rather than one’s state of dress. We are ordinary people who believe that simple nudity is beneficial to our physical and mental health. As ordinary people we hold that nudity should be neither a moral nor a criminal concern.

We are ordinary naked people — law abiding, decent, respectable citizens who want the same things as ordinary clothed people.

I am an ordinary person.

  • For a number of years I have been making a very unscientific study of what makes someone a naturist. I have been unable to find any characteristic other than nudity. Naturists can be rich or poor, highly educated or not, atheist or very religious, liberal or conservative, and so forth. You name it, naturists are just ordinary people.

  • Hear, hear. We are just ordinary people and yes, we are a diverse group. The one thing I have found in common amongst naturists, besides nudity, is that everyone is friendly. While there may be people that have differing opinions or different lifestyle choices, I’ve never met a naturist that was rude or unfriendly.

Ordinary naked people I like that. One thing I have found in common is that we seem to be able to come to grips with our own bodies. Most of the folks I have met in nudism have a story about how they came to it. Usually there is some sort of life changing event a highly personal event that caused them to shift gears dramatically. My own was going away to war and coming home realizing just how short a precious life is and a vow to not take tomorrow for granted. I decided it was time to do all the things I had been putting off or been afraid to try. Once I went to a nude beach I knew I had found freeedom. Finally I think that the most interesting people I have met and the most interesting conversations I have had have been in nudist resorts.

  • Nudists/naturists ARE just ordinary people, naked. The main thing that distinguishes us from the rest of society other than clothing is our shared ethics/philosophy/principles, whatever you want to call them, which give is that sense of community lacking in everyday life.

Our behavior when gathered together nude is really no different than outside society strives to be, usually unsuccessfully. Folks are generally friendly, courteous, helpful, non-judgmental; traits often lacking in the Textile world. As naturists we feel our differentness requires us to be better than ‘real’ society demands… and it works!

‘Ordinary’ we are… except for that little nudity thing and the fact that we all get along together pretty well for a bunch of strangers!
