"Body shame originates in our minds with our thoughts and perceptions. Neither our religion nor our culture makes us ashamed of our bodies, only our belief that we should be ashamed. Shame comes from our own thoughts which we have the power to change. If we perceive no shame then there is none. No one can make you feel ashamed without your permission."

Nudists Next Door

Yesterday, Nudiarist tweeted a link to a Dayton City Paper article, Nudists Next Door which discussed nudism in the Southwest Ohio region. The article was very positive and Mark Luedtke’s reporting was objective and refreshingly devoid of the usual editorial comments one often reads in stories about nudism. The comments by Jo Anne Roessler, co-owner of Cedar Trails, and Chris, a member at Cedar Trails, were positive and well presented.

About the only comment I could possibly take issue with was “Dayton citizens may never look at their neighbors the same way again.” I’d like to think that my neighbors would still look at me and treat me the same as they would if I weren’t a naturist. We’re ordinary people. We’ve just discovered a wonderful lifestyle that they haven’t yet.

I read the City Paper article, and the only thing that surprised me was “716 AANR members in Ohio” — to which I respond (react?), “Only 716? Man, we’ve got to do some recruiting.” What is that: just a bit more than 1% of the population of greater Dayton? That’s not many. So when the writer says, “The people of Ohio may never look at their neighbors the same way again,” I want to say, “Not to worry: nude recreation has a long way to go before it’s anywhere close to mainstream.” (Would that there were more a bit more reason to worry about such a thing.)

On the other hand, I’m pleased to see a positive article on clothes-free recreation … We’re not as mainstream as we might want to be, but at least there’s no where the reason to be worried as much about being “shamed” … (Not a good thing, shame.)

    Naked Peace,

  • That number does seem kind of low. I wonder where they got that number? There must be more AANR members in the state that. According to AANR‘s 2010 World Skinny-Dip Record, 464 people participated at AANR clubs in Ohio. (There are five landed and three non-landed clubs.) Of course, not all participants were AANR members.

As of January 1, 2010, the population of Dayton was about 166,000 so 716 card carrying nudists state-wide represents less than half of one percent of Dayton’s population. That’s hardly enough to constitute a minority let alone approaching mainstream.

  • 716 out of 166K may not seem like a lot, but let them walk down Main Street together and it would look like an army! Considering the fuss a few half-dressed bikers can cause, imagine hundreds of men, women, and children peacefully strolling down the boulavard on a Sunday morning! Now THAT would be a sight to behold!

Then, if that half-percent figure holds nationwide, picture a Washington DC rally with million and a half naked people! Holy smokes, Fox News would have a field day! Hell, they ALL would!

Hi I am a nudist and have been practicing when and where ever I can. I am a woman but that kind of girl not a real woman as I am a transgender crossdresser!

I am interested in communicating with like minded individuals that are nudist and interested in either crossdressing or would like to consort with a crossdresser my e-mail is cindysweets1@hotmail.com

Tell me your intrest and I will get back to you Ladies, Couples and Gentlemen all are welcome!!!

  • I debated whether or not to approve the above comment and had doubts about its legitimacy. Even with those doubts, I decided to accept it. However, I’m not endorsing anything Cindy may be offering or promoting.

If we, as naturists and nudists, really believe in body acceptance, then there is a legitimate place in naturism for transgendered people.
